The West Dean Professional Knowledge Network is pleased to welcome Chris Billingshurst as the sixth speaker in our series, The Sustainable Designer.
In this talk, Chris Billingshurst will the opportunities and sustainability benefits of upcycling.
Chris has been the professional upcycling for interiors industry’s foremost change-maker and educator for over a decade. With a background in marketing, interior decoration and art and a growing interest in environmental issues, she launched Twitter’s first networking hour for professional upcyclers in 2014. #UpcycledHour became an Internet phenomenon and ran for over four years, introducing the world’s premier membership platform for professional designer-remakers in 2016. By 2019 the organisation had acquired authority status and rebranded to become the House of Upcycling.
Working with industry leaders and academia including KLC School of Design and the British Institute of Interior Design, the House of Upcycling continues to eliminate outdated precepts, elevating the standards and status of professional upcycling far beyond its humble origins. Its members’ clients include famous names from the world of media and the Arts as well as a wealth of interior designers. Chris became the first person to write about professional upcycling for interiors for an academic publication (De Montfort University’s 'State-of-the-Art Research & Practice’ 2019) and is a member of the International Upcycling Research Network created for the scaling-up of upcycling globally. The House of Upcycling is an Interior Design Declares signatory and the first organisation of its kind to host stands at Clerkenwell Design Week, the London Design Festival, Grand Designs Live, the VM & Display Show and the House & Garden Festival, promoting professional upcycling as a craft solution that unites style with sustainability.
