About this course

Floral and vintage fabrics enhance and give depth to many projects. Students will be asked to search through their collections for fragments to applique onto a square sample – a mixture of couching and hand embroidery will be used to complete the work.

Course Description

Using plants, flowers, gardens and green spaces as inspiration, you will create a mixed media textile collage. This will then be stitched and added to with other elements. You will have the option of choosing a wall hanging or folding form to create.

Hunt through your collections to floral-inspired fabrics, old embroidered snippets of tea cloths or handkerchiefs – and any images that inspire you.

It’s helpful to think about colours and choose some that you would like to work with during the course. You can also use sketchbooks if you have them and find them relevant.

The piece will be hand stitched and tacked during the course and can be further embellished on a sewing machine if desired.

During the course, you will learn how to create a unique composition and stitch it together. We will start by creating elements for your collage, using the pieces that you have chosen from your ‘stash’ and some that Anne will donate. You will learn how to create the background, foreground and decorate your work with a variety of stitch and embellishing techniques. You will leave the course with work that is stitched together and may need some further hand stitching after you leave.
