About this course

The Minimalist Flat Tight Back Binding (MFTB) with Drum Leaf text block is an ideal introduction to Book Arts. This no-sew, accessible structure uses minimal tools and is perfect for creative exploration and book works.

Course Description

This workshop introduces you to the Minimalist Flat Tight Back Binding (MFTB) with a Drum Leaf text block - a simple, elegant book structure that’s ideal for artists’ books and creative book works. It requires no sewing and can be made with just a few hand tools and basic materials, making it both accessible and versatile. The binding is especially suited to heavier papers and lends itself well to image-based or visual content.

The course is divided into two sessions. In the first session, you will focus on learning the construction process step-by-step. You will be guided through selecting appropriate materials, understanding the structure, and developing the skills needed to create a clean, functional, and professional-looking book. You’ll gain a solid understanding of how the MFTB works and why it’s a useful tool for book artists.

In the second session, you will begin to develop your own personal book art or book work. You will be encouraged to use the structure as a platform for creative exploration — thinking about sequence, materials, layout, and meaning. Whether you are working with drawing, collage, photography, or text, you will have the opportunity to make the book your own.

By the end of the course, you will have a finished book, as well as the skills and confidence to continue experimenting with this structure in your own practice.
