The course is designed to make you aware of the ever changing nature of a specific outside space. You will be walking every day on the wider West Dean Estate along a country pathway, taking on some of the Monarch’s way. The first and second day will be a three hour walk, with a one and a half hour walk on the final day. The course is designed to teach you ways of producing drawings inspired by the landscape.
On day one, your tutor will help you to see and notice the world around you as you walk. Then, back in the studio, you will be taught how to make use of your experiences and the memory of the walk through drawing. Drawing and mark-making will be considered in the context of place.
Day two will focus on recording the outside space through specific drawing exercises during the walk. Back in the studio, you will be taught to develop your sketches and drawings for the development of at least one in-depth drawing.
Day three will give you the chance to consolidate your findings and experiments. You will repeat the walk again with an intention, and you will learn how to harness and make the most of that intention so that it feeds into your drawings in the studio.
At the end of the course, you will have learned a methodology for working from the landscape. You will have understood how you might develop and use it for the making of drawings and more.
Your tutor will work with you individually, and will also encourage you to share with the group and learn from it.
Please note, this is a physical course as you will be walking 4 miles (6.5km) per day on uneven terrain and with steep slopes that can be muddy in places, depending on the weather. Then, when back in the studio, you will be carrying on working with information from that morning’s walk. You will be walking in all weather, so please bring suitable waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear. Please make sure that you are fit and able to walk this distance on uneven terrain on a country pathway on the West Dean wider estate.
