Flowers have long been a beloved subject for textile designers, offering countless opportunities to infuse colour, form, and familiarity into designs. They allow for interpretations that range from the tiniest bud to expansive garden scenes. Together, we will explore various design solutions and developments, with Sarah showcasing a selection of fabrics drawn from her extensive collection, including her own work and that of her sister.
You will gain an understanding of floral layouts and patterns, beginning on paper as you develop a personal and intuitive language of rhythmic pattern. Transitioning to fabric, you will practise a variety of techniques for painting on cotton, calico, and linen – such as mark-making, freehand painting, stencilling, potato printing, and using tapes and masks – while considering pattern placement and colour.
Throughout the course, you will evolve your ideas by painting directly onto fabric, building a personal vocabulary of pattern and colour with the aim of creating pieces to wear, display, or embellish, or simply as reference works.
