Allow colour to conjure up or evoke an environment; your tutor will show you how through her own practice and demonstration of techniques. You will learn how to pick from a range of different media and to experiment with them. The aim will be to prepare you for your own journey in colour.

By way of introduction, you will look though materials, including your own drawing kits. Some of the simplest media are surprisingly effective and so often creativity is linked to a personal affinity with the medium.

The tutor will be teaching the group with examples and discussions, as well as giving a high level of individual tutoring. Sketching, short demonstrations and drawing exercises will be given by the tutor before you start assembling your own drawings. You will explore spaces outdoors and indoors to find inspiration for observational drawing, with time to work back in the studio where there will be a clothed model available for a small part of the course. With your new found inspiration, you will follow the steps towards acquiring new techniques of using colour to work with mixed media. Learn to combine materials in novel ways and discover a range of mark-making techniques, layering of materials and working on plain and coloured grounds.

There will be opportunity to reflect and to display your work if you wish. By the end of the course, you will have expanded on your drawing skills through experimentation and found new and exciting ways of drawing with colour by using a range of mixed media materials.

Included

On this course, the College will supply most of the materials, including a pack of 24 soft pastels, a pack of Koh-i-noor watercolour paints, a pack of oil pastels, a pack of coloured pencils, A3 pad of cartridge paper 220gsm, A4 coloured card and a glue stick. There will be some Posca pens and some inks to share amongst the group.

Available from shop: A good variety of art materials are available to buy, including oil pastels, watercolour paints, pencils, coloured pencils, posca pens, soft pastels, paper and coloured paper, should you wish to buy any.

Additional information

Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the working outdoors and in the studio, this includes stout covered footwear i.e. no open-toed shoes or sandals.

Arrival day
Residential students can arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 6.45pm for registration
6.45pm: Welcome, followed by dinner (included)
8 - 9pm: First teaching session, attendance is essential

Daily timetable
Course teaching 9.15am - 5pm (lunch included)
Dinner: from 6.30pm (included for residential students)
Evening working: students may have access to workshops until 9pm, but only with permission from the tutor and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed

Residential students will need to check out of rooms by 10am
