This course teaches you the basic skills and processes for creating beautiful handmade quilts. Its suitable for beginners, though some experience using a sewing machine would be an advantage.
First, you will learn a brief overview of patchwork and quilt history while you do some relaxing hand stitching to ease you into the workshop. The following morning, you will be guided through the cutting and patchwork process for traditional pattern blocks and improvisational patchwork. You will be encouraged to play and try new techniques, and complete a 1.0 x 1.4 m quilt top.
On the second day, you will learn how to baste your quilts (or put the layers of your quilt together) and begin hand stitching. Finally, you will learn to trim and bind your quilts. This is an ambitious project to finish in three days, and slower sewists might have hand work to take home with them.
Cotton quilt wadding, with white Sashiko thread for hand quilting, Sashiko needles and a thimble will be provided by the tutor. A spool of machine thread will also be supplied.
Available from tutor: If you wish to use naturally-dyed fabric from your tutor, the cost is £45.
Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes).
