About this course

This course is a short weekend with a timetable variation: 10am-5pm on Saturday and 9am-4pm on Sunday.

Make your own stained glass panel from start to finish using traditional techniques. You will learn all the stages involved including: design, glass cutting, leading, soldering and cementing, plus sandblasting as an optional extra, to complete a colourful decorative panel.

Course Description

Experience how to make a stained glass window using traditional heritage craft techniques, which have hardly changed since the medieval period. You will learn how to draw out a design, how to cut glass, how to lead the glass pieces together, how to solder the joints and, finally, how to cement the panel, so that it becomes a usable stained glass window.

You can choose to stay true to the traditional style of stained glass or to create a modern design with abstract shapes and colour choices. The tutor will help you with your design, explaining how to use coloured and textured glass, and how to add texture or detail to your composition using the sandblaster. Your glass panel can be a maximum size of approximately 28cm x 28cm.

There is no need to prepare anything in advance, as all the processes will be explained to you on a sample panel at the start of the course, leaving you free to work at your own pace over the rest of the weekend.

Timetable for 2 day, short weekend courses

Saturday, session one: 10am-1pm & 2-5pm. Please arrive by 9.45am.

Sunday, session two: 9am-1pm & 2-4pm.

Lunch and tea/coffee is included.

Course Materials

Included

  • On this course, the tutor will supply all of the materials, including: glass, lead, solder and cement.

What students need to bring

  • An apron
  • Packaging (e.g. bubble wrap) for finished panel

Additional information

Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio. This includes stout covered footwear, i.e. no open-toes or sandals. There may be restrictions on equipment available to students in tutor’s absence.

Sasha Ward

Sasha Ward has worked in architectural glass for thirty years. She trained in stained glass at The Central School, London, then studied Fine Art at Trent Polytechnic, followed by an MA in glass from the RCA. She has her own studio in Wiltshire but also works with manufacturers to produce large scale work for public buildings using a variety of materials and techniques. Her work can be seen in over seventy public buildings throughout the UK.
