About this course

This course runs through everything you need to know in order to plan and produce a picture-perfect photoshoot of your interior design projects – as well as how to pitch it to the press and bag that dream editorial feature.

Course Description

Want to get your interior design work featured in a magazine, but no idea how?

Whether you’ve already got a wealth of work under your belt, or are just starting out in your professional interior design journey, this one-day workshop will walk you through the whole process, explaining how to turn a completed design project into a press-ready pitch with editorial-standard photography, ready to submit to your favourite publication.

Blending informative presentations with hands-on activities and a visit to a leading interiors store, the day will focus on five key areas:

  • Prep: Analysing different types of publications and examining where your work might fit in best
  • Pitching and Protocols: How to prepare a press pitch, find and hire a photographer, and the related practical aspects you need to know
  • Propping and Photographing: Exploring the concept of styling and photographing rooms and spaces “to camera” to enhance your finished photography sets, through scrutinising existing photography and in-person visual merchandising arrangements with a stylist’s eye
  • Planning your Shoot: Everything you need to prepare for a successful shoot day, alongside managing the day itself
  • Publishing and Post-Publicity: How to take those final steps to getting your project into print (and making the most of it afterwards!)

At the end, you’ll leave with a PDF filled with useful resources, along with a clear process to work through to perfect your pictures, impress those editors and get that press coverage.

Course Materials

Included

On this course the College will supply all of the materials.

What students need to bring

While there are lots of interiors magazines available for reference in the classroom, if there’s a particular publication you’d love to be featured in, you might like to bring a recent copy of it with you (as we will be analysing key magazines in one of the exercises).

You might also find it useful to have access to any existing photographs of either previously completed projects, or examples of other designer’s projects you’ve been particularly inspired by (whether magazine tear sheets or photos on your phone or a tablet device), for reference.

Available to buy

Available from tutor: As a five-times published author, I will bring a small stock of my books with me (which I can sign), which are available to purchase on the day. My full range of titles are listed below. I usually bring a few of each but if there’s anything you’d definitely like to purchase, feel free to contact me via my website in advance so I can ensure I have enough copies!
