Learn the ancient craft of Kogin counted thread sashiko, originating in the Northern part of Japans main island, Honshu. Using Japanese openweave fabric and a selection of colourful kogin embroidery threads, you will make a sampler covering a selection of the 40 or so basic patterns (known as Modoko). Learn how to stitch small continuous patterns and how to arrange motifs to make a larger pattern as well as design your own.
- How to make the basic stitches, typically one, three or five in length
- How to start and end your work, leaving a neat finish on the back of your work
- How to stitch a selection of the 40 or so basic patterns that make up the language of Kogin (known as Modoko)
- Stitching small continuous patterns
- Adding motifs together to make a larger arrangement
- How to stitch Nanbu Hishizashi motifs (a close cousin of Kogin typically 2, 4, 6 or 8 in length
- Translating weaving and other designs into Kogin patterns
- How to design your own Kogin pattern
Examples of work made using Kogin will be provided by the tutor for inspiration.
The tutor will also explain about the history of Kogin sashiko in Japan.
Students will need basic sewing skills to do the class.

On this course the tutor will supply all of the materials including: Kogin evenweave fabric, Kogin threads in a variety of colours and a Kogin needle
What students need to bring
- Small pair of sharp scissors
- Needle threader (optional)
- Graph paper (small square grid)
- Weaving patterns/inspiration for stitching.
- Glasses for close work if you wear them.

Additional information
Wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear i.e. no open-toes or sandals.

Classes are from 9.15 - 5pm
