Susan Christopher-Coulson
Susan Christopher-Coulson gained a BA (Hons) in fashion design at Kingston Art School. Whilst working in the London fashion industry, Susan also taught part-time on the Art Foundation Course at Colchester Institute.
With a young family, Susan returned to drawing natural history and botanical subjects. Following the success of her first solo exhibition, botanical work became the focus of her work, which has gained many awards including two RHS gold medals.
Besides being collected by private buyers in the UK and abroad, Susan’s work is held in the Shirley Sherwood Collection at Kew Gardens, the RHS Lindley Library, the Sheffield Botanical Gardens Florilegium and was commissioned by the Tudor House Garden Museum, Southampton. Her work has featured in art magazines and numerous books on botanical art.
Susan is a member of Sheffield Florilegium Society and is an elected Fellow of the Society of Botanical artists, where she was Vice President for eight years.
Describe your approach to teaching.
To encourage experimentation with pencils and colours, building a strong knowledge core and confidence using the medium. Students can then develop their own style and approaches in a relaxed atmosphere with continuously rotating individual tuition.
What inspires your own work?
The colours, textures, forms and juxtapositions of the natural world inspire my work.
