I currently run my own business offering private tuition in mount making, CAD, wax carving and Stone setting as well as teaching in a freelance capacity for other jewellery schools. Additionally I supply a professional CAD modeling service to the jewellery industry.

What projects are you currently working on?
I have recently finished a Diamond and Pearl engagement ring for a private customer, which I am very happy with.

Do you have any tips for recent graduates?
Work hard and practice, practice, practice, practice. You can never practice enough and never stop learning.

How do you think studying at West Dean College prepared you for what you do now?
I met some amazing people and tutors at West Dean from all over the world who were really inspiring. But actually, it was the material science lessons (which I found very hard at the time) that probably helped me the most in my current work on a day-to-day basis. Also, the breadth of education was fantastic, not just the core skills in metal work and restoration, but the additional skills we learnt from visiting lectures such as technical drawing and photography these were incredibly helpful and I still use these skills today.

What's your favourite memory from your time at the College?
Just having the space and peace to learn from some of the best in the world. (The food was good, too)

Did you receive any form of funding to study at West Dean?
Yes, a full scholarship.

Did you have a different career before coming to West Dean? If so why did you change career paths?
I was just 19 and working in a furniture shop so it was a welcome change in direction that set me up for my future career. Here is my website if you are interested in what I do currently. www.stephenbarnettjewellery.com
