About this course

Learn various techniques for threading beads and pearls of varying sizes and types for necklaces and bracelets. Learn how to attach catches securely and neatly.

Course Description

This course will teach you various methods of stringing beads, as well as demonstrate the technique of pearl knotting for necklaces and bracelets. There will also be instruction on attaching catches securely and neatly, and how to use steel cable, crimps and wire protectors successfully with heavier beads.

You should attend with a selection of your own beads and catches, which you would like to use for the day’s instruction. The college will supply threading equipment on the day and a selection of threading silks, needles and cable, but you are encouraged to bring in any additional threads specific to your beads.

Course Materials

Included

On this course the College will supply a selection of threading materials to be shared by the group, including:

  • A selection of silk threads and plastic-coated wire threads
  • Needles
  • Gimp
  • Base metal crimp tube

What students need to bring

A selection of your own beads and catches for stringing during the day and any additional threads/ silks/ steel cable you would like to use

  • Small sundry items for stringing that might be needed in addition to the ones supplied by the college. These will not be expensive.

Additional information

Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes).

Timetable

Student registration: 10.30am - 11am
Course teaching: 11am – 5.15pm 
Morning session: 11am - 1pm
Lunch break: 1pm - 2pm (lunch is not included)
Afternoon session: 2pm - 5.15pm (15 minute break, 3.30pm–3.45pm)
Teaching finishes: 5.15pm  
 

General Information

Short courses are open to anyone aged 18 and over. The course fee covers tuition and materials where stated. You will need to bring all other items listed under the ‘Materials to bring’ section.

Refreshments

Coffee and tea are included in the course fee, but you will need to bring lunch with you to eat in the refreshments room. There are also plenty of other local venues to purchase food.

Access

Please tell us about your needs in confidence by emailing: [email protected] This venue has steps to the front reception, with limited access via a side gate to the ground floor. There is a small lift to higher floors or stairs.

Annie Ruthven-Taggart trained at Saint Martin’s School of Art and Design and The Sir John Cass Faculty of Art, Design and Manufacture at London Guildhall University, graduating with a BA honours degree in Jewellery and Silversmithing.
