About this course

Learn how to create a vibrant still life with confidence. Whether you are a beginner or would like to refresh your skills, these techniques with soft pastels are accessible to everyone with enough practice. This will be an opportunity for you to try different styles in pastel painting, to loosen up your approach and to improve your work.

Course Description

In this two-day workshop, you will create a Christmas still life painting using soft pastels. You will use various techniques available to the pastel artist and look at how versatile this wonderful medium can be.

The course will cover an introduction to soft pastels, colour theory and mixing, composition and working from observation, choosing the right colour and blending, and drawing techniques.

You will improve your drawing techniques, colour perception and explore the medium’s potential in a friendly, creative environment. Your tutor will offer individual help and advice.

At the end of the course, there will be an informal critique of all work produced, and any related questions will also be answered.

What students need to bring

  • Some soft pastels are provided, however, it may be worthwhile having a selection of your own soft pastels to practise both in the class and at home. Unison is one of the best on the market and they offer affordable sets of ‘half sticks’ in different shades of certain colours. It is good to have some green and red ranges for this workshop. There is also a very good starter set available which has all the basic colours in it.
  • You can bring your own simple Christmas related objects and fruits, if you wish, to be used in your compositions. Some still life arrangements will be provided.
  • You will also need a suitable plastic folder to protect your work and take it back home.
