Using theory and practical work, Ria will guide you through the basics of soil preparation, soil health, plant raising and crop care. The day will also include managing pests and diseases while creating diversity, beauty and space for nature to thrive.
In this one-day introduction to home vegetable growing, you will dig into the key elements for vegetable growing, giving you the knowledge and skills to get started with your own beautiful and productive garden. We will cover the basic principles of soil health, which will include how to prepare the soil for planting and compost making. You will learn how to raise and care for your plants; some of this will include practical work such as seed sowing, which you will be able to take home and care for.
How to plant and care for your plot throughout the season will also be covered, through looking at plant support methods and protection from pests and diseases using organic principles, while welcoming wildlife into the garden.

On this course, the tutor will supply materials used for sewing some seeds to start your crop.
What students need to bring
- Your own garden trowel
- Outdoor clothing – suitable for gardening, including wet weather gear, boots and gardening gloves
- Pens/pencils and paper for note-taking (Pencils work best in damp conditions.)
Additional information
Wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear i.e. no open-toes or sandals. Safety boots, if specified.
Please note, part of the course will be in the Sculpture Courtyard, which is a 10-minute walk from the main house through the walled garden or can be accessed by car. The Sculpture Courtyard is open on one side so be prepared for any type of weather.
Wear outdoor clothing that is suitable for gardening, including wet weather gear, boots and gardening gloves.
