The day will begin with an in-depth lecture on plants for shade and how shade-loving plants can be used to our advantage to promote interest and seasonality within our gardens. Martin will demonstrate his methods for choosing a planting palette for a shade border, things to consider during the selection process, as well as a detailed look at plant character and form, with a ‘right plant, right place’ philosophy.
Martin has gathered inspiration from various garden designers and horticulturists on how shade-loving plants have been used successfully within their designs. There will be opportunities to discuss designer plant selections and how to incorporate planting combinations into your own planting designs.
You will have the opportunity to observe shade planting within the gardens of West Dean for inspiration, before researching the appropriate shade plants for your own gardens with Martin’s support, as well as help with where to source your plants. There will be enough information provided during the day to enable you to be able to create your own planting palette of shade-loving plants.
On this course the tutor will provide a plant species list template.
