About this course

Create individual jewellery with techniques demonstrated according to your experience. Beginners will be introduced to working with silver through a series of exercises before embarking on finished items.

Course Description

Create individual jewellery and designs. Develop your ideas through experimentation and be guided to realise your jewellery ideas in three-dimensions. Techniques are demonstrated according to your needs.

Please note: if you would like to do some stone setting, then please enrol onto a stone setting course. We will not be covering that in this workshop.

Your experience and complexity of your idea will determine what you can achieve on this one-day workshop. On booking the course, your email details will be shared with the tutor who will contact you to discuss your idea prior to the course and the materials you will need to purchase.

Course Materials

Included

The college will supply some copper sheet, piercing saw blades and other sundries such as alum and flux. The cost of the course does not include silver; this will need to be purchased prior to the course following discussion with your tutor.

What students need to bring

  • Sketchbook with a range of possible ideas
  • Any jewellery tools
  • Students with experience may wish to bring work in progress to continue with.

Available from shop: Silver can be purchased from the College Shop, which stocks a range of sheet, wire, rod, tube and findings. These will be available in set sizes and lengths, suitable for a wide range of projects. Tools (some tools are available for hire at no cost from the College) Pencils and drawing materials

Available from tutor: Additional supplies of silver as well as silver findings

Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio. This includes stout covered footwear, i.e. no open-toed shoes or sandals.

Course teaching: 9.30am - 5pm
Morning session: 9.30am - 1pm
Lunch break: 1pm - 2pm*
Afternoon session: 2pm - 5pm
Teaching finishes: 5pm

Tutors

Laila Smith

Laila Smith is a studio jeweller and tutor. Her mathematically inspired geometric jewellery is sold across the UK. She trained at Manchester Metropolitan University and then undertook a 15 month Fellowship in The Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham. She has 17 years teaching experience, both in further, higher education and leisure classes.
