This course introduces beginners to the exciting possibilities of warm glass, using fusing techniques to form glass in the kiln.
The course will involve lots of hands-on work, practical demonstrations, slide-show presentations and individual instruction, all with the aim of ensuring that you learn the art of creating your own glass and learn more about your own creative, personal style.
You will bring along your own image design or inspirational reference. During the course, you will make your own original handmade glass panel. The suggested size is A5: 148 mm x 210 mm.
By the end of the course, you will have learnt how to cut glass and shaping techniques, you will have understood about glass compatibility and what happens to the glass during the firing cycle, and you will have completed your own original handmade glass panel.
The course fee includes the cost of all glass and the firing.
Available from shop: A good variety of art and craft materials, including coloured pens and pencils, erasers, paper, tracing paper, card, notebooks, superglue, scissors, rulers, tweezers, fine tip marker pens and art brushes
Please note, as the kiln firing of final pieces of work will need to be done at the end of the course, any work left will be ready to collect from the early afternoon of the following day and will be kept for six months. If you are unable to arrange collection within this time, you may wish to consider booking an additional night’s accommodation to enable you to collect your work the following day when the kiln has cooled. Panels can be packed and posted to you by the tutor – please arrange this on the day, along with payment of the postage and packing cost.
Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes).

Martin Cheek has been making mosaics for over 30 years and is the author of seven best selling books on the subject. He hand makes every piece of fused glass for his mosaics, each batch sometimes requiring several firings in the kiln to get it right. There is always some mystery in what the glass will do in the metamorphic process of heat.
