Course Description

Learn how to produce finished examples of faux wood graining on boards ready to take away and keep for your portfolio on this CPD-accredited two-day course.

On the first evening, your tutor will give a welcome talk, a brief overview of what to expect over the next two days, and show short videos explaining the techniques. You will have the opportunity to familiarise yourself with the tutor and workspace in this introduction to wood graining techniques.

Day one - you will begin with a short explanation of the history and current use of wood graining. You will then watch a demonstration by your tutor, who will provide a clear explanation of the correct practice for surface preparation, including primers and basecoats. Under supervision, you will prepare and prime your first sample board. Following an explanation of the use of glazes, you will mix the glazes under your tutor’s guidance. You will be introduced to the tools and equipment used to create wood graining effects and will begin practicing these techniques with supervision. After lunch, you will independently prepare and basecoat additional practice boards. With guidance and supervision, you will undertake the practical activity using the premixed glazes to practice and refine oak wood graining paint effects.

Day two - after a short recap of the skills and techniques learned so far, you will prepare, prime, and basecoat new work boards. You will then be assigned an oak wood graining effect to produce a competent and realistic sample for assessment by your tutor. The assessment will include your knowledge of the type of wood graining to be reproduced, the skills involved in preparation and mixing of glazes, and your understanding of the tools and equipment. Your tutor will oversee your work, answer any questions, and offer guidance and encouragement.

You will then use your final work board to produce a finished example of wood graining of your choice for the final assessment. You will work to a set criteria and be asked questions along the way. The assessment will focus on your knowledge of the equipment and materials you choose to use, as well as the execution of your final piece. Two boards may be selected to take away from the course for your own personal portfolio.

You will be provided with information sheets and will also receive reflective practice and evaluation handouts. If you wish to obtain the CPD Certificate, your details will be collected at the end of the course.

This course is suitable for those studying decorative arts, painters and decorators, conservation and restoration practitioners, craft enthusiasts, scenic artists and set designers, professionals in the building and construction industry, and anyone working in the preservation of heritage buildings.
