The day divides into three lectures. Rosy will begin by looking at the Ranunculaceae family, particularly the herbaceous plants, and how it includes more than just buttercups! Rosy will show you how diverse this family of plants is, from the small spring anemones to the tall elegant summer flowering thalictrum, showcasing them and suggesting how to use them in a border or container plant combinations.
This will be followed by a lecture about selecting plants for sun and shade. This lecture will bring you an understanding of how plants can be gently persuaded to thrive in not so ideal conditions. Rosy aims to help you understand which plants are best in these planting situations, including how much sun or shade is required.
Finally, Rosy will introduce her Queens of the Border - the perennials that she wouldnt be without. This will cover those plants that have many uses in garden borders or containers and are a mainstay to creating great spaces. Not all the plants in this will be unusual, but they will be very versatile and can be used in many ways for plenty of interest.
Rosy Hardy is Hon. Vice President of the Royal Horticultural Society and, together with her husband Rob, they own the renowned plant nursery Hardys Cottage Garden Plants. They offer an unrivalled selection of 1,200 varieties of herbaceous perennials, from proven garden favourites to the more unusual and noteworthy, all grown outside in peat free compost, at their 13 acre site in the beautiful Hampshire village of Freefolk. To date, they have won 24 RHS Chelsea Gold Medals and 30 at Hampton Court Flower Show.
