About this course

This course is a short weekend with a timetable variation: 10am-5pm on Saturday and 9am-4pm on Sunday.

Develop your portrait skills; learn how to get the best out of your subjects in any situation – whether on the street, at home, at a wedding or other special occasions.

Course Description

Using available light (no studio lighting), you will learn how to take fresh, interesting photos of people – portraits that really capture the mood and personality of a person at a specific moment.

You will learn:

  • How to use available light
  • How to break the rules of composition and take a new perspective
  • How to establish mood, personality and movement
  • Ways to experiment with framing, lighting and composition
  • How to make imaginative use of surroundings
  • Ways to establish mood, personality and movement

A working knowledge of Photoshop or Lightroom is required.

Included

A photography session with a portrait model on the first afternoon

What students need to bring

  • fully working DSLR camera, fresh batteries or charger and camera to computer leads
  • camera instruction manual (If available)
  • Plenty of empty memory cards
  • Tripod (If available)
  • a USB memory stick to save work in progress and at the end of the course
  • Any accessories you commonly use for photography
  • pen and paper
  • clothing suitable for extensive outdoor sessions (including waterproof trousers)

Additional information

You need to be familiar with using a computer. A core understanding of Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom is preferable, but not essential. You will be allocated a PC to use throughout the course.

Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes).
