About this course

This course is a short weekend with a timetable variation: 10am-5pm on Saturday and 9am-4pm on Sunday.

Learn the art of crafting a traditional hand-stitched gathered lampshade with pleated lining and a self-bias trim. This course combines traditional techniques with modern charm, showcasing timeless craftsmanship to create a truly unique piece.

Course Description

This workshop takes you on a journey into the art of traditional hand-stitched lampshade making, providing a rich, hands-on experience in the tools, materials and techniques that go into creating a beautifully crafted piece. Led by an expert instructor, you will master the process of constructing a gathered lampshade from start to finish, learning methods passed down through generations.

The course begins with an introduction to the structure and function of a lampshade. You will explore key design considerations such as fabric selection, preparation and the tools necessary to bring your design to life. The first step is learning how to bind the frame, ensuring a secure foundation for the fabric, lining and trim. Once the frame is ready, the focus shifts to accurately estimating the fabric required to fit the shape and size of the lampshade, ensuring perfect alignment. You will then carefully prepare the fabric, pin it into place and hand-stitch it using the traditional lampshade stitch, securing every element with precision.

The workshop continues with an in-depth look at pleated lining, where you will learn the art of folding and securing fabric to create a refined interior that enhances both the beauty and strength of the lampshade. This process is essential for achieving a high-quality, professional finish.

The final stage introduces the application of a self-bias trim, a hallmark of traditional craftsmanship. This hand-stitched trim adds a polished edge to the lampshade, concealing raw edges and stitches and completing the look with a refined finish.

Throughout the workshop, you will be encouraged to personalise your piece with unique fabric choices and trims, blending timeless techniques with your own style. By the end, you'll leave with a beautiful, functional lampshade that reflects both your creativity and the care invested in its creation.

This workshop is ideal for anyone looking to learn a new skill, enhance their craft or create a meaningful, handcrafted addition to their home.

Additional information

What fabric to bring: For hand-stitched traditional lampshades, lightweight fabrics like silk, tana lawn, and block-printed Indian cottons work best. These fabrics drape beautifully, create a soft, gathered or pleated look, and allow light to shine through nicely. Vintage or antique textiles can also add a unique touch.

Fabrics to consider:

  • Silk: Lightweight silks, such as saris, offer a luxurious sheen and diffuse light beautifully while being durable.
  • Cotton: Tana lawn is an excellent choice due to its lightness and drape. Block-printed Indian cottons add a distinctive charm.
  • Linen: Light linen works well, provided it’s not too heavy or open-woven.
  • Other Options: Vintage or antique fabrics for unique textures and patterns.

Weight Guidelines:

  • Top cover fabric: Lightweight fabric between 70gsm and 90gsm would be suitable.
  • Lining fabric: Lightweight fabric between 70gsm and 90gsm would be suitable.

Avoid: Heavier fabrics like upholstery, embroidered fabrics or those with voids or holey textures.

N.B. If anyone brings a fabric that isn’t suitable, your tutor will have plenty of options available for you to purchase during the workshop.

Additionally, your tutor suggests two online shops where suitable fabrics can be purchased:

  • Liberty
  • Cloth House London

Please wear comfortable clothing and footwear suitable for a hands-on crafting environment.
