About this course

Make a selection of leather slip cases using traditional leather working tools and techniques.

Course Description

On this relaxed two-day course have fun making a selection of leather slip cases for all your travel essentials. A collection that includes a travel wallet for your passport and tickets; a slip case for your iPad/tablet; a wearable phone case; card holder and key ring. Though working from templates, you will have ample opportunity to influence the look of the finished piece as each one will be handmade by you, ready for your next adventure.

Working alongside you, Jeremy and Carla will demonstrate each step and process, and the traditional hand tools and techniques to complete them. This will include:

  • Pattern making
  • Using a template
  • Marking out the leather
  • Cutting out the leather
  • Marking out for punch holes
  • Punching stitch holes
  • Hand stitching
  • Finishing edges
  • Riveting & press stud fixing

Course Materials

Included

On this course the tutor will supply most of the materials including: cardboard, leather, thread, needles, wax, rivets, press studs, edge cote

What students need to bring

Comfortable footwear Notebook & pencil

Available from tutor: Extra leather if required

Additional information

Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes). Possible equipment restrictions in tutor abscence.

Timetable

Arrival day
Residential students can arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 7.15pm for registration. Students arriving earlier are welcome to purchase dinner in the College Dining Room from 6pm.
Students meet their tutor in the Bar at 7.30pm prompt to go to studios.
First Teaching session: 7.30pm - 9pm (attendance is essential)

Daily timetable
Course teaching: 9.15am - 5pm
Morning session: 9.15am - 12.45pm including coffee/tea break
Lunch break: 12.45pm - 2pm*
Afternoon session: 2pm - 5pm including coffee/tea break
Teaching finishes: 5pm
Evening working: students may have access to workshops until 9pm, but only with permission from the tutor and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed.

Departure day
Course teaching: 9.15am - 3pm
Teaching finishes: 3pm

Residential students will need to check out of rooms by 10am. Please note, the tutor may make slight variations to the daily timetable as required.

Jeremy and Carla Bonner

Jeremy and Carla Bonner established Bonner Leather Studio in 2014 just outside Cirencester, where they work together. Jeremy graduated from Birmingham School of Art and Carla graduated from Newcastle on Tyne Polytechnic.
