You will be using simple hand and machine stitch in both a functional decorative or emotional way alongside various collage methods using glue, staples and perhaps nailing depending on your choice of materials.
After an initial presentation with a quick practical materials challenge, the course will be structured with some short demonstrations of simple stitch techniques and ways of joining so that you can work freely towards producing a series of small experimental samples that may be refined and lead to finished pieces.
As you join, cut up, stitch, staple, layer, sand down and reconnect your materials you will be encouraged to investigate the qualities and the inherent value that we place on certain materials and perhaps subvert them by using them in unusual ways or combinations as we develop small compositions and assemblages.
Stitch methods will include: couching, random weave stitch and using a thick thread in the bobbin of a sewing machine.
There will be group demonstrations, discussions and individual help throughout the course and additional demonstrations or techniques can be added as and when individual students require.
On this course the tutor will supply some of the materials including small pieces of wool felt and scrap fabrics and a box of oddments of mixed media materials. Small clamps, sandpaper, white paint, wire. Carpet tacks and PVA glue will be provided by the College.
The College sewing machines will be available for use, alongside some basic hand tools, Bring your own sewing machine if you would prefer to use it.

Wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear i.e. no open-toes or sandals. There may be restrictions on equipment available to students in tutor’s absence.
Arrival day
Residential students can arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 7.15pm for registration. Students arriving earlier are welcome to purchase dinner in the College Dining Room from 6pm.
Students meet their tutor in the Bar at 7.30pm prompt to go to studios.
First Teaching session: 7.30pm - 9pm (attendance is essential)

Course teaching: 9.15am - 5pm
Morning session: 9.15am - 12.45pm including coffee/tea break
Lunch break: 12.45pm - 2pm*
Afternoon session: 2pm - 5pm including coffee/tea break
Teaching finishes: 5pm
Evening working: students may have access to workshops until 9pm, but only with permission from the tutor and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed.

Residential students will need to check out of rooms by 10am. Please note, the tutor may make slight variations to the daily timetable as required.
