About this course

This course introduces the techniques of traditional passementerie tassel making, but with today's interiors and soft furnishings in mind. Complete a full-size tassel and cord suitable to hang on a curtain, or as a pull.

Course Description

Techniques taught include how to roll the mould with a cord, and make a wired skirt and ruff at the waist. You will also learn how to make a variety of cords using a four-hook cord-twister, including the rolling cords, over bullions, and suspension cords. Good quality Swedish linen yarns, in a rich colour range will be used to make your tassels, covering wooden tassel moulds.

The tutor will demonstrate techniques at each stage, to guide you step-by-step through to completing a sumptuous tassel and matching cord.

Anna will also discuss the historical development of passementerie in the grand houses of England and Europe, with a description and classification of processes and techniques, and showing the various stages of making tassels, cords, braids, and fringes in London trimmings company workshops. You will also see contemporary interpretations of this classic form of work from current textile designer-makers, including the tutor’s own work.
