Random weave is an interesting, versatile and relatively simple basketry technique to learn. However, unlike its name might suggest, it is not merely a “random” technique!! It can be worked with a variety of materials, which each produce different results.

On this one-day course, you will learn the basics of random weave basketry techniques. You will work with glossy lapping cane, which looks a bit similar to bamboo but is very different to work with; it is the closest material to bamboo available in the UK.

You will have a few options: to make a small nest-like basket or, if you prefer, a more abstract enclosed pebble form. By placing a small vase or jar in the basket, you could use it for creating a simple Japanese influenced ‘ikebana’ flower arrangement.

You will learn how to make a mould to work around, how to prepare your materials and the essential principles of random weave basketry techniques.

You will leave the course with the skills to make more similar baskets and resources enabling you to order materials.

During the day, there will be a slide show giving a brief context to random weaving as a relatively new basketry technique.

On this course the tutor will supply all materials and equipment needed.

What students need to bring

It’s always useful for students to bring a notebook, etc. and phone/camera to photograph your own work as it progresses.

Additional information

Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes covered footwear (no sandals or open toes).

Student registration: 10.30am - 11am
Course teaching: 11am – 5.15pm 
Morning session: 11am - 1pm
Lunch break: 1pm - 2pm (lunch is not included)
Afternoon session: 2pm - 5.15pm (15 minute break, 3.30pm–3.45pm)
Teaching finishes: 5.15pm  
 

Short courses are open to anyone aged 18 and over. The course fee covers tuition and materials where stated. You will need to bring all other items listed under the ‘Materials to bring’ section.

Refreshments

Coffee and tea are included in the course fee, but you will need to bring lunch with you to eat in the refreshments room. There are also plenty of other local venues to purchase food.

There is a small lift to higher floors or stairs.

Short course students are required to sign a safety compliance form as part of West Dean Health and Safety regulations.
