Day 1We will cover the basics of shibori stitching and prepare a series of accurately stitched pleated works that can be used to create additional patterns with further stitching.We will also work on the Mokume woodgrain pattern, achieved through rows of closely spaced running stitch.Day 2Using the fabrics we’ve prepared, we will create additional patterns. Specifically, you will work on the following shibori sample pieces:Nui variations – Learning to pull threads at different tensions to create pattern variationsWhip stitch – Over-stitching down both sides of pleated fabricKatano – Creating repeated patterns through pleated fabricYou will also learn how to pull up and tie off your threads tightly to form a solid resist.The tutor will explain how to dye your fabrics at home using Dylon and indigo dye to bring your patterns to life.
What students need to bring
- You should bring a selection of soft cotton, quilting cotton or linens to work on and a basic sewing kit.
Specifically:
- 2m x 1.5m soft cotton fabric. This must have been pre-washed to remove any preserving chemicals or bought PFD (prepared for dyeing).
- Other cotton and linen fabrics can be brought along if desired.
- Sewing kit to include: Small sharp scissors, dressmaking scissors, a selection of needles (ideally long and thin)
Optional:
- Thimble, needle threader
- Ruler
- Fabric marker pens (water or air soluble)

Additional information
Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes).
