On this course, students who have done the Introduction to random weave basketry will develop and build on techniques learned previously. New students will be introduced to the basic principles of random weave basketry techniques. All students will be able to consider form, alongside having the option to explore different materials: cane, paper yarns, raffia, flax, threads, recycled and more.
You will also be able to think about scale, density, colour and surface embellishment through stitch.
Work made on the course could simply be materials/technique-led or additionally informed by a more personal element of your choice.
Basketry is a slow and meditative craft, allowing time for contemplation and experimentation; it is rooted in ancient traditions alongside enormous potential for experimentation and innovation.
You will be free to focus on a single piece or make a couple of exploratory samples to develop further in your own time.
The tutor will bring a selection of inspirational samples for you to observe.
There will also be a slide presentation illustrating aspects of the history and context of random weave basketry, and how it is being used by contemporary makers today.
On this course the tutor will supply all materials and equipment needed
It’s always useful for students to bring a notebook, etc. and phone/camera to photograph your own work as it progresses.
Available from tutor: Small amounts of additional materials may be available to buy directly from the Tutor on the day. Please note that this option is cash only.
Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes).
