This workshop immerses you in the craft of creating a tailored lampshade, a design known for its clean lines, snug fit and sophisticated finish. Ideal for those seeking to hone their skills in precision and artistry, this hands-on course guides you through every step of crafting a beautifully finished lampshade, from frame preparation to the application of lining and trim.
The course begins with an overview of the tailored lampshades structure and design. You will learn about essential tools, materials and fabric considerations to ensure a professional outcome. The first task involves binding the wire frame with cotton tape, a foundational step that provides a sturdy base for the stretched fabric and lining.
You will then move on to fabric preparation, measuring and cutting the material with precision. Under expert guidance, youll stretch the fabric over the frame, carefully pinning it into place to achieve a smooth, taut finish. This stage highlights the meticulous attention to detail required for the tailored style, ensuring every element fits perfectly.
Next, you will create the balloon-style lining, a key feature of this lampshade design. The fabric lining is stretched and secured inside the frame, enhancing both the aesthetic and structural integrity of the piece. This step not only complements the exterior but also ensures the lampshade is as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside.
The final stage focuses on the application of a hand-stitched self-bias trim. This finishing touch conceals raw edges, provides a polished look and completes the design with elegance.
Throughout the workshop, you will have the opportunity to personalise your lampshade with your choice of fabrics and trims, blending timeless techniques with your creative vision. By the end of the course, you will leave with a bespoke tailored lampshade that combines traditional craftsmanship with your unique style.
On this course, the tutor will supply all the tools to use for the duration of the course:
Top cover fabric: 1–1.5 metres of fabric (minimum width 110cm) – please see additional information
What fabric to bring: For hand-stitched traditional lampshades, lightweight fabrics like silk, tana lawn and block-printed Indian cottons work best. These fabrics drape beautifully, create a soft, gathered or pleated look, and allow light to shine through nicely. Vintage or antique textiles can also add a unique touch.
Fabrics to consider:
Weight Guidelines:
Avoid: Heavier fabrics like upholstery, embroidered fabrics or those with voids or holey textures.
N.B. If anyone brings a fabric that isn’t suitable, your tutor will have plenty of options available for you to purchase during the workshop.
Additionally, your tutor suggests two online shops where suitable fabrics can be purchased:
Please wear comfortable clothing and footwear suitable for a hands-on crafting environment.
