Course Description

Learn how to produce finished beautiful examples of traditional faux marble on boards ready to take away and keep for your portfolio on this two-day CPD accredited course.

On the first evening, your tutor will give a welcome talk, a brief description of what to expect over the next two days, with some short videos explaining the techniques.

You will be able to ask questions and familiarise yourself with the tutor and workspace in this introduction to faux marbling techniques.

Day One
Listen to a short explanation of the history and current use scenarios of faux marbling. Watch a demonstration of faux marbling by your tutor. A clear explanation of the correct practice for surface preparation, including primers and basecoats, will be given.

Under supervision, you will prepare and prime your first sample board. Following an explanation of the use of glazes by your tutor, you will then prepare and mix the glazes.

You will be introduced to the tools and equipment used to create faux marbling effects.

Under supervision, you will begin to practice creating marbling techniques, including background effects and veining techniques.

After lunch, you will independently prepare and basecoat further practice boards. With guidance and supervision on what has been demonstrated, your tutor will oversee you as you undertake the practical activity using the premixed glazes to practice and master creating faux marbling paint effects.

Day Two
After a short recap of skills and techniques learned so far on the course, you will prepare, prime, and basecoat new work boards.

You will be assigned a faux marbling effect to produce a competent and realistic sample for assessment by your tutor. Assessment will include the level of knowledge of the type of marble to be reproduced, the skills involved in preparation and mixing of glazes, and the use and knowledge of the tools and equipment. Your tutor will oversee the work being carried out, answer any questions, and offer guidance and encouragement.

You will use your final work board to produce a finished example of faux marble of your choice for the final assessment. You will work to a set criteria and be asked questions along the way. You will be assessed on your knowledge of the equipment and materials that you choose to use during the assessment and the execution of your final piece.

Two boards may be selected to be taken away from the course for your own personal portfolio.

You will be provided with information sheets and will also be given reflective practice and evaluation handouts. Details will be collected for those who wish to have the CPD Certificate.
