An experimental course exploring screenprinting and painting, to build up layers of colour on opaque and semi-transparent fabrics. The tutor will explain simple but evocative approaches to painting and printing with Procion P dyes on natural fabrics. You can then experiment with all the possibilities under her guidance to make images, collages, constructions and flat fabrics to play with, and explore transparency and depth of colour in the character of the painted and printed marks themselves.
Working with dyes, you will explore painting and screenprinting on un-primed fabrics. Starting with paintbrushes, you move into the use of paper stencils, in combination with painting on a variety of fabrics provided by the tutor in sample sizes. Then you can develop a personal project with the tutors guidance.
Luminous colour is an inherent quality of dye used on silk fabrics. Colour and transparency are explored by looking at the characteristics of a variety of cloths and marks in relation to each other. The tutor will encourage you to find your own vocabulary and way of working.
Please bring any of your previous work to show the group and discuss with the tutor if you wish. You will also have the option of having a mentoring session with the tutor about your textiles.
Handouts will be provided with details of suppliers and methods used.
Included
The cost of the dyes provided for the course.
