This course takes the plants and flowers of the magnificent West Dean gardens as inspiration. After getting familiar with the stencil cutting and stencil printing techniques that we will use, we will go outside and spend some hours sketching, getting ideas on paper of plants or flowers that we will use as inspiration for prints.
We will then study the multiple ways to transform a sketch into a layered design that can be stencil printed. Depending on your style, taste and level of experience your designs may be simple (maybe inspired by Scandinavian printing styles) or much more detailed. You will be able to make beautiful prints regardless of your sketching and printing experience.
The second part of the workshop will be spent in printing the designs on fabric to take home with you, to turn into a cushion of a small wall hanging or anything else you would like.
Going home from this course you will have a skill that you will be able to continue practicing at home at your kitchen table. The supplies that you will need are quite simple and you get to take the brushes with you that you have used during the course, as well as a supply list to use going forward.
The course is suitable for complete beginners and can also be taken by artists and designers who want to learn a new skill and anyone in between.
