This course follows a specific structure in which each section of the articulating human form is studied across paired sessions.
The morning session looks at the relevant anatomy, the origin and insertion of muscles, the extension and flexion of joints and the balanced articulation of muscle groups. These sessions will be an introduction to the anatomical structure of the figure, with demonstration drawings to show how this knowledge can be applied to drawing.
In the afternoon session, you will be given time to incorporate an anatomical understanding of the human figure into your personal drawing practice. You will have the opportunity to draw the figure in a series of poses that demonstrate the specific features studied.
First Evening
- Introducing key concepts and terms in anatomy
Day 1 - Morning
- The core articulation the articulation of the ribcage on the pelvis around the spine
- The distribution of the weight of the figure through the opposition of the ribcage against the pelvis is sometimes referred to as contrapposto and is shown by key skeletal landmarks in the pelvis and ribcage.
Day 1 - Afternoon
- Tutorial guidance to clarify the structure and articulation of the ribcage, spine and pelvis
Day 2 - Morning
- The shoulder girdle and pelvis a more complex articulation that leads to the limbs
- The shoulders and pelvis provide a structure in which the more complex articulation of the arms and legs are anchored.
Day 2 - Aftenoon
- Tutorial guidance to clarify structure and articulation
Day 3 - Morning
- The legs, arms and hands this will be a precise description of the complexity of the articulation of the limbs and its relationship to structure.
Day 3 - Afternoon
- Tutorial guidance to clarify structure and articulation
There will be a model for the duration of the course for the tutor to refer to and for you to draw. By the end of the course, you will have several drawings and a deeper understanding of anatomy and how this informs an understanding of drawing the human figure.
