About this course

This short course explores embroidery and kantha quilting techniques focused on reusing cloth and creating tactile memories. This workshop develops greater understanding of hand stitch methods and innovative ways to recycle fabric of all types.

Course Description

This short course focuses on hand embroidery and kantha quilting techniques with an emphasis on reusing cloth and engaging with memories. Contemporary and historic quilts can act as commemorative devices, and this workshop offers a tactile, creative way to use repurposed materials to create textured stories through simple hand-worked methods. Samples form a key element of the workshop and provide inspiration and sensory understanding.

You will experiment with stitch processes working into repurposed materials and testing colours, texture and scale. Fabrics include cotton, linen and manmade net. Needles and threads such as cotton perle, soft cotton, ribbon, paper yarn and wool will be provided. You will come away from the workshop with a range of tactile samples that you can develop or enhance into larger projects depending on your aims and time frame.

Processes explored in the 3 day workshop range from surface stitch, simple kantha quilting, suffolk puffs, shadow work and appliqué. You might like to bring a few small remnants of plain cloth that is personal to you and a pair of sharp scissors. All threads and materials will be shared with the group.
