About this course

Learn tambour beading, a specialist beading technique. Discover how to use the tambour hook to create chain stitch and apply beads and sequins, and how to apply these skills to embroider the cottage garden flowers.

Course Description

Learn how to master the art of tambour beading, a specialist beading technique used in the haute couture ateliers of Paris, during this two day course. In this workshop you will learn the essential skills you need to know to use the tambour hook effectively. This will include how to use the tambour hook to create chain stitch which is the basis of all tambour techniques. This includes how to make a starting stitch and finishing stitch and how to neatly finish your thread ends. You will then learn how to use this chain stitch to apply beads and sequins, a technique which once mastered, is much faster than applying beads and sequins with a needle. You will practice these skills on the first day of the workshop with the assistance of the tutor to ensure you feel confident using the tambour hook.

On this first day you will also learn important technical aspects of using the tambour hook such as how to embroider in all directions with the tambour hook and form neat corners with beads.

The second day of the course will be focused on the floral design. You will use a beautiful selection of beads, sequins and crystals to embroider the design. In the process of embroidering the floral design you will learn how to apply the skills you learnt on the first day of the course to a design. You will also discover different methods of applying sequins such as using the fan filling technique to fill petals with sequins and applying sequins in lines in the English style.

You do not need any prior experience of tambour to attend this course but it is one of the more advanced hand embroidery techniques.
