Next week the Visual Arts department, part of the School of Creative Arts at West Dean College, will be hosting a visit from UK-based artist Stuart Whipps. As well as giving an early evening talk on his practice, Stuart will also engage with the full-time Visual Arts students the following day through one-to-one tutorials.Currently exhibiting at British Art Show 8, Whipps uses the history and processes of photography to underpin much of his thinking. His recent exhibition 'Isle of Slingers' at Spike Island, Bristol, explored the formation of ideas and the fixing of images, making particular reference to Edward James, founder of West Dean College. Incorporating references to The James Press, Tilly Losch and James' surreal garden of 'Las Pozas', Xilitla, Whipps uses archival information, photographs and objects to conjure unexpected connections and draw out new narratives.stuartwhipps.comThe talk will take place in The Old Library in the Main House on Monday 24th October, between 5.30 and 7pm. This event is free and open to the public but booking is required. For more information and to reserve a place, please contact [email protected] / 01243 818305.
