The workshop will begin with playful drawing and design exercises using seasonal foliage, natural objects and festive imagery as inspiration. You will explore how to simplify your drawings into strong graphic shapes that translate effectively into lino prints. We will consider positive and negative space, scale, spacing, symmetry and repetition, looking at how a small collection of motifs can be arranged to create flowing, scattered or structured patterns.
After developing your designs, you will transfer an image onto a lino block and carve it safely using specialist cutting tools. Through demonstrations and individual guidance, you will be introduced to the essential principles of lino cutting, including how to create clear silhouettes, expressive lines, textures and contrasting areas.
Using water-based block-printing inks and a limited, harmonious colour palette, you will print your motifs by hand across sheets of warm ivory paper. You will experiment with rotating, repeating and overlapping the design to create an individual pattern. There will also be opportunities to combine lino printing with hand-painted details, drawing and collage, embracing the subtle variations that give handmade prints their distinctive character.
Once your wrapping paper is complete, you will adapt the same visual language to produce coordinating Christmas cards and gift tags. You might use a single print as a central card design, create a decorative border or repeat a smaller motif across several pieces.
Suitable for beginners as well as those with drawing or printmaking experience, this relaxed evening workshop offers an accessible introduction to lino cutting, pattern design and hand printing. By the end of the course, you will leave with your carved lino block, original test prints and a coordinated collection of wrapping paper, cards and gift tags ready to use over Christmas.
