Discover and experiment with a range of techniques, from casting richly embossed, sculptural paper pulp sheets and 3D objects to forming delicate, lightweight Eastern-style papers inspired by landscape and place. Participants will learn to use papermaking to explore materials of landscape and landscape themes within the framework of sheet making and the making of individual art pieces and gain confidence in using these techniques to develop their own work by familiarising theirselves with a range of techniques such as, western papermaking, eastern papermaking, casting. couching, foraging and the use of colour partly as a dyestuff but also as inclusions.
Both styles can be textured and coloured using locally gathered pigments, plants, and natural dyes (all supplied), making each piece uniquely connected to the local Sussex landscape. Your handmade paper and paper objects can stand alone as artworks or become part of your own creative practice. You'll leave with a beautiful portfolio of locally made papers and the skills and inspiration to continue exploring at home.
The course will include a slide show at the beginning and an opportunity to reflect on what we have all learnt and made. We will be collecting materials from the gardens and woodland plantation at West Dean so please bring suitable footwear and weatherproof coats.
The course will be taught by demonstration and personal attention. While developing the themes from the previous Creative papermaking with Colour, this is a stand-alone course and participants do not need to have been on the previous one to benefit.

Arrival day - first date of course
Residential students can arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 6.45pm for registration
Student welcome, followed by dinner: 6.45pm (dinner included)
Teaching session: 8pm-9pm (attendance is essential)
Daily timetable
Course teaching: 9.15am-5pm
Morning session: 9.15am-12.45pm including coffee/tea break
Lunch break: 12.45pm-2pm (lunch included)
Afternoon session: 2pm-5pm including coffee/tea break
Teaching finishes: 5pm
Evening working: students may have access to workshops until 9pm, but only with permission from the tutor and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed.

Residential students will need to check out of rooms by 10am.

Jane is an experienced tutor who teaches papermaking workshops
in a variety of settings from museums and galleries to schools and
in the landscape. Recently she has run workshops for Stroud
International Textiles and The British Museum. She is a member of
IAPMA and has exhibited nationally and internationally.
