Course Description

The focus of Drawing Days is to explore drawing in its broadest sense and to develop confidence in self-directed study.

Transform your on-location drawings made at West Dean into striking monotypes and linocuts. In this intensive, hands-on workshop, you’ll experiment with playful printmaking techniques, develop fresh interpretations of your fieldwork, and turn initial sketches into finished artworks.

Through a combination of practical exercises and library research, we will begin to explore how artists develop ideas and how you can apply Idea generating techniques to your own practice. Throughout the day you will consider the cyclical nature of the creative process and use drawing and collage in response to a series of experimental exercises.

Please note tutorials are booked separately through the Bookings Office and are free of charge. Please contact [email protected]

Course Materials

What students need to bring

ALL STUDENTS are to bring:

  • Work in progress and invite comments/suggestions
  • Recommendations for exhibitions attended and upcoming artist talks/events
  • Subjects for discussion
  • Any favourite drawing or painting materials you particularly enjoy using
  • Should you need further materials, we have a generously stocked craft shop, which opens daily from 8.30am – 2pm

Drawing days are an opportunity to share and support each

TUTORIAL STUDENTS please bring:

  • Work made during your FDAD including coursework, sketchbooks, anything
  • Subjects, artworks, and exhibitions you have been exploring
  • Course topics you are considering booking
  • A list of anything else you would like to discuss or gain from the tutorial

During the 45 minute session you will reflect on your experience of courses so far, discuss some of the work, identify areas that may need addressing and considering their part in your personal creative development. Time will be given to your aims and aspirations and to discerning an appropriate path forward. It is essential to bring sketchbooks and a portfolio of work to inform the discussion.

As preparation, it may help to use your reflective journal and to jot down any insights you have gained about the way individual courses play a part in your long-term creative development.

As a result of the discussion, key points will be noted and you will receive a copy. You are encouraged to make any comments.
