Using direct approaches to screen printing, rather than photographic elements or flat colour blocks, this short course will open your eyes to the infinite variety of creating texture and layers of marks to conjure your vision. We will cover the use of paper stencils, ghost prints, direct mark-making with charcoal, graphite, water-soluble pastels and crayons, watercolour and combinations of all. You will be applying paint and mediums with brushes and other tools to develop your work, overprinting or not, as the image making leads you along.

You will be inspired by the immediacy of this process which can be developed to create complex layered prints, crossing the bridge between painting and printmaking.

Your tutor has used screen monotype extensively in her work over the last 30 years of her artistic life.

Included

On this course the College will supply most of the materials, including acrylic paint, screen medium, Neocolour water-soluble pastels to share amongst the group and some newsprint, cartridge paper and a water-soluble graphite pencil per student.

What students need to bring

• Brushes
• Inspirational source material which could translate to the process, (sketch book, colour palettes, and subject matter. ( If you don’t have this don’t worry)
• A4 photocopies of simple silhouette forms to use if needed ie animals, leaf shapes (3 or 4 to a page)
• Various brushes of different shapes and sizes (quality is not too important, and nothing over 10 cm wide)
• (If you want to explore water colour painting on screen, then water colour brushes would be good as well)
• A kitchen roll
• Blunt ended (child’s) scissors
• Apron
• A small water spray bottle
• A small sponge
• A small plastic tea tray to mix on and hold brushes and pots etc
• Notebook and pen for making notes etc

Additional information

Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes). Possible equipment restrictions in tutor absence.

Arrival day - first date of course
Residential students can arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 6.45pm for registration  
Student welcome, followed by dinner: 6.45pm (dinner included)
Teaching session: 8pm-9pm (attendance is essential)

Daily timetable
Course teaching: 9.15am-5pm  
Morning session: 9.15am-12.45pm including coffee/tea break  
Lunch break: 12.45pm-2pm (lunch included)  
Afternoon session: 2pm-5pm including coffee/tea break  
Teaching finishes: 5pm    
Evening working: students may have access to workshops until 9pm, but only with permission from the tutor and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed.

Departure day - last date of course
Course teaching: 9.15am-3pm (lunch included)  
Teaching finishes: 3pm  

Residential students will need to check out of rooms by 10am.
