About this course

Learn to carve a spatula and decorate with chip carving and milk paint. You will learn how to carve even facets and to decorate with simple accurate chip carving. The spatula can then be finished with natural milk paint.

Course Description

Deborah will teach you how to make a spatula from locally sourced greenwood using an axe and knives. You will learn safe and accurate axe work and well established knife holds in order to safely carve a spatula.

You will draw without a template, learning how to create symmetry by eye with the foreshortened gaze. There will be an emphasis on crank and profiles.

Included

Greenwood is included. Tools will be provided for use on the course, but bring your own if you have them.

What students need to bring

  • Tools if you have them (Please label your tools with your name) wear Sturdy footwear

Additional information

Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes).

Timetable

Arrival day
Residential students can arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 6.45pm for registration
6.45pm: Welcome, followed by dinner (included)
8 - 9pm: First teaching session, attendance is essential

Daily timetable
Course teaching 9.15am - 5pm (lunch included)
Dinner: from 6.30pm (included for residential students)
Evening working: students may have access to workshops until 9pm, but only with permission from the tutor and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed

Departure day
Course teaching: 9.15am - 3pm (lunch included)
Residential students will need to check out of rooms by 10am
