Peter Katona
Peter Katona founded the internationally renowned guitar duo ‘The Katona Twins’ over 30 years ago and has given recitals in the major concert venues throughout the world including performances at Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Konzerthaus in Vienna, the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow, the Suntory Hall in Tokyo, and the Philharmonie in Berlin. As classical soloists of the ‘Night of the Proms’ he performed live to half a million people in arenas across Europe among others in the Sportpaleis Antwerpen on 12 nights. He played together with renowned musicians such as Yo-Yo Ma and world class ensembles such as the BBC Concert Orchestra and the London Sinfonietta. His arrangement and recording of M.de Falla’s Ritual Fire Dance has recently been used in the US blockbuster TV series Fargo and his other arrangements in the Broadway show "The River" featuring Hollywood star Hugh Jackman. He has been invited on numerous occasions to record and perform for international television and radio stations such as the BBC (UK), EÉN (Belgium), KDFC (USA), SWR (Germany), VPRO (Netherlands), RTÉ (Ireland) and M1TV (Hungary). Peter Katona’s 10 CD releases include solo, duo, chamber music and concertos written by Scarlatti Handel; Bach; Mozart; Vivaldi, Rodrigo; Albéniz, Piazzolla, Manuel de Falla and his own compositions. The Katona Twins’ Rodrigo Album became Editor’s choice of the Gamophone Magazine and their M.de Falla recording CD of the week on KDFC (San Francisco USA). Their crossover album "Guitar Freaks" was CD of the week on Netherland’s Classic FM Radio Station and on Germany's Radio station HR2.
Peter Katona has won over ten international prizes and awards as a soloist and with his guitar duo at major competitions among others in New York (Concert Artists Guild), London (YCAT) and (Park Lane Group), Germany, France and Hungary. He was awarded the prestigious Borletti-Buitoni prize, as the first guitarist in the trust's history and the Cultural Award of the City of Kassel, Germany. Peter Katona’s wide repertoire spans from Bach and Mozart to contemporary classical music written by Hans Werner Henze and Elliott Carter to his arrangements of pop classics. He has commissioned many contemporary compositions and has given world premier performances of works by Michael Berkeley (Concerto for Two Guitars and Orchestra with the London Sinfonietta), Mate Hollos (Royal Festival Hall, London), Judith Bingham (Wigmore Hall) Carlos Sanchez Gutierrez (Carnegie Hall, New York) and Derek Charke (Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele) etc. Peter Katona’s own compositions are regularly part of his concert performances and are released on CDs.
Besides the classical guitar, Peter Katona also plays on flamenco guitar and on banjo. Flamenco works often feature is his concert programmes. In 2021 he toured for four weeks with the Irish National Opera performing on both, banjo, and guitar in Peter Maxwell Davies’s contemporary chamber opera ‘The Lighthouse’. Peter Katona has over 20 years teaching experience in higher education. From 2000-2021 he was a visiting professor for guitar at the Musikhochschule in Frankfurt am Main/Germany. From 2007-2012 he was a lecturer in guitar at the University of Liverpool/England. Since 2018 he has been a lecturer at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin, Ireland. His students have successfully participated in several international music competitions.
In addition to his experience at various music schools, he has been teaching regularly at international master classes for the past 30 years. 2007-2011 he was ‘Artist in Residence’ for the educational programme for San Francisco Performances/USA
