Sandrine Maugy is an artist working predominantly in watercolours, finding inspiration in nature. She is a fellow member of the Society of Botanical Artists. Her work hangs in collections in Europe, Australia and the United States. Sandrine regularly runs residential courses at the prestigious West Dean College and teaches botanical painting at Kew Gardens. She runs an art blog, YouTube channel Atelier Sandrine Maugy and a Patreon site, with students from all over the world. Sandrine’s first book Colours of Nature was published in 2013 and her second book Botanical Watercolours through the Seasons in July 2022. The French translation was published in the summer of 2023. She also writes articles for Artists & Illustrators Magazine. In 2023 Daniel Smith Watercolors released the Sandrine Maugy Palette.

Sandrine’s painting style captures the pure, vibrant colours of nature using wet-in-wet watercolour washes, giving this traditional style a contemporary twist.

Describe your approach to teaching.

My approach to teaching includes many demonstrations as well as some more formal lectures, along with personal advice, instructions and feedback.

What inspires your own work?

My work is inspired by the beauty of nature, the colours in the garden and the way light plays on the bright hues of flowers, foliage and fruit.
