Sophie Bowen

Sophie Bowen is a textile artist and maker from Somerset working with natural dyes, drawing and hand embroidery. She studied a BA Drawing degree at Falmouth University, followed by completing a Textiles Master's at Bath Spa University in 2021.

Sophie’s work is a contemplation on nature, its seasonal shifts, patterns of regrowth and irregularity and temporariness. This is intertwined with a process-led practice that embraces slowness and allows elements of the creative process to unfold organically, facilitating a thinking-through-making approach.

Drawing and mark-making are at the heart of Sophie’s creative practice, using them as an intuitive and contemplative tool to create a sense of movement and flow. Marks made initially with brush and ink are translated through a variety of textile processes.

In 2022, Sophie was awarded the Radcliffe Trust emerging maker studio residency at New Brewery Arts in Cirencester, where she was resident for two years and where she also began leading her own creative workshops. Sophie is now set up in her home studio in Hampshire where she creates bespoke embroidery pieces and textile artworks.
