Certificate in Residential Interior Design 2019 - 2019

Yael Shmueli-Goetz

Interior Designer

What were you doing before studying and why did you decide to study here?
I was a developmental psychologist, working as a senior research fellow at UCL for over twenty years before deciding to take the plunge and enrol on a design course at KLC. I always had a passion for design and wanted to find a course that would teach me the necessary technical skills, build my confidence as a designer, and connect me with relevant people in industry. I carefully researched various London based courses and felt that KLC was the best fit for me.

How do you think studying at KLC School of Design prepared you for what you do now?
The course at KLC provided me with a very good grounding and a solid set of newfound skills which I could then develop and grow through work in the industry. I don't think I could have set off on this journey without having completed the course.

Can you identify some of the highlights and challenges of your time with us?
I think connecting with like-minded people, most of whom had other careers prior to embracing design, was a real strength, as was the experienced teachers delivering the course. Not only did they have to teach the syllabus but they were also tasked with managing a large group of assertive and vocal women. It all added to the fun. Personally, I found getting to grips with CAD programs a real challenge but I'm glad I persevered.

How has your career evolved since graduating?
I set up my studio, plainHjem, after working for a couple of interior design studios, during COVID, which was quite a leap but luckily it has paid off. I began to work with Tuckey Design Studio three years ago on a large interiors project and now work closely with three architectural studios, two in London and one in Scotland, on a freelance basis, whilst also taking on independent projects. I enjoy the variety of work and, having worked for many years as an academic where my time was my own, I appreciate the freedom freelance work offers. The downside is that it is not as stable and secure and the work/life balance we all strive for can be elusive.

What projects are you currently working on?
I am currently working on a private house project in London, an apartment for Tuckey Design Studio, a house in Scotland for Brown & Brown Architects and another London based residential project for Flower Michelin Architects. These projects are all at different stages of design, which is how I manage to juggle them all.

What do you consider your biggest achievement to date?
I took a leap of faith, changing careers at age fifty, and am so happy I did. I think being able to work solidly in this field and to collaborate with phenomenally gifted colleagues gives me the greatest joy and a genuine sense of achievement. Carving out a niche for myself in a field awash with very creative people is pleasing and rewarding. I just hope I can keep it up!

Do you have any tips for recent graduates?
Approach each project with passion, integrity, authenticity, curiosity, and patience. Do not compare yourself or your work to others. Have conviction in what you can offer and just do you!
