Course Description
In this course, you’ll get hands-on experience with traditional patchwork and quilting, exploring how these techniques can be combined with contemporary creative approaches. You’ll experiment with found and recycled materials, explore creative ways to combine fabrics, and design your own decorative quilted panel using appliqué and patchwork.
You’ll also look at examples of Indian appliqué and hand-stitching techniques and use these ideas to add detail and personality to your work.
The course encourages playful experimentation, allowing you to incorporate small found objects, recycled textiles, and collage elements into your designs. By the end of the workshop, you’ll have developed new skills in hand sewing, textile manipulation, and creative composition, leaving with a quilted panel or a set of samples and inspiration to continue exploring your own textile projects.
Course Materials
Included
On this course the tutor will supply some of the materials including:
- Recycled or vintage cloth, trimmings & edgings, found objects, recycled fabric scraps and papers.
- Hand sewing needles and sewing threads
- Some material to buy on the day directly from her in cash.
On this course the College will supply some of the materials including -sewing machines, fabric scissors, paper scissors & masking tape.
What students need to bring
- A small sewing kit, including hand-sewing needles (Crewel No. 9), favourite embroidery threads, and small, sharp scissors for detailed work (useful but not essential).
- Recycled materials: e.g., linen or cotton; old tablecloths, cushion covers, pillowcases, napkins, clothes (such as cotton shirts), dyed, printed, or patterned fabrics; curtain fabrics; plain fabrics like curtain lining for backing.
- Found materials for appliqué: e.g., old buttons, bottle lids, and random bits of haberdashery; edgings like fringe, pompoms, or ric-rac; odd bits of fastenings; and sari silk scraps.
- Recycled papers: graphic packaging from dressmakers patterns, food and household products, sweet wrappers with wording, broken books, and maps.
- A colour photocopy (to cut up) of an image, item, or paper that is personal and evokes a fond memory.

Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio.

Course teaching: 11am – 5.15pm
Morning session: 11am - 1pm
Lunch break: 1pm - 2pm (lunch is not included)
Afternoon session: 2pm - 5.15pm (15 minute break, 3.30pm–3.45pm)
