About this course
Learn the art of bookbinding with this introductory course. You will be introduced to some standard bookbinding tools and be taught the basics of bookbinding, producing two small books to take home.
Course Description
This course will introduce you to the art of bookbinding and is pefect for beginners of the craft. No previous experience is necessary.
You will be introduced to some standard bookbinding tools and learn the basics of bookbinding. At the end of the day, you will be able to go away and continue to make more books in the same binding style.
Over the course of the day, we will make two books using simple structures. First, we will create a soft cover, single section pamphlet; we will then expand on this to create a hard cover, single section, mini notebook.
You will have the opportunity to work with different papers, board and book cloth and you will learn about measuring, folding and cutting different type of materials. ?
Course Materials
Included
On this course the tutor will supply most of the materials, including:
- Decorative papers for covers
- Coloured paper for endpapers
- Book cloth for covers
- 135gsm paper for books
- Sewing thread
- Waste paper
- Silicone paper
On this course the College will supply some of the materials, including: 2mm Grey Board (Quarters) and PVA
Tools: Awls, bulldog clips, rulers, scalpel knives/blades, beeswax, bone folders, glue brushes, bookbinding needles, glue pots, pencils, pencil sharper, scissors and cutting mats will be provided for use in the studio on the day.?
What students need to bring
A4 folder or padded envelope to take your books home in. Please note: students will not need to bring any other materials as this will all be supplied by the College and tutor.

A variety of art and craft materials are available from the Garden's Gatehouse Shop.
Additional information
Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes).?

Student registration: 10am- 10.30am
Course teaching: 10.30am-4.30pm
Morning session: 10.30am-1pm
Lunch break: 1pm-2pm (lunch is not included)
Afternoon session: 2pm-4.30pm (optional 15 minute break)
