About this course
Learn to draw a statue in the Greek section of the British Museum and from a model in the studio. This course forms part of a series of six courses that you can purchase as a group or individually.
Course Description
Located just behind the British Museum, West Dean Bloomsbury provides the perfect setting for a day of observational drawing in two very different environments. This course offers the opportunity to draw from both a classical Greek sculpture in the museum and a life model in the studio, helping you develop your observation and drawing skills through direct experience.
The day begins in the Greek galleries of the British Museum. After meeting at West Dean Bloomsbury, you will visit the museum as a group and spend the morning drawing a Greek statue. Guided exercises will help you look closely at proportion, shape and structure, while encouraging you to capture form through line and tone.
In the afternoon, you will return to the studio to draw a life model whose pose is inspired by the sculpture studied earlier in the day. Working from both sculpture and life allows you to explore the similarities and differences between the two, from the stillness of carved stone to the energy and presence of the human figure.
Throughout the course, you will practise measuring, observing and simplifying form, while experimenting with expressive mark-making and tonal drawing techniques. By the end of the day, you will have built confidence in your observational drawing, gained experience of working in both museum and studio settings, and developed a deeper understanding of how artists approach the figure from different sources.

On this course the College will supply some of the materials, including paper, charcoal and a rubber per student. A model for the afternoon of the course.

Additional information
Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes).
