About this course

Photoshop is an industry-standard image-editing program used by designers to add colour, texture and detail to visual materials and presentation. This course is aimed at design students and professionals, and examples and course materials will relate to interior design practice, but could be applied to other disciplines.

Course Description

The course will introduce you to the introductory skills needed to begin working with Photoshop. Strong emphasis is placed on best practices, and approaches are derived from experience and working solutions. During the course, you will cover:

  • Photoshop User Interface
  • Document Set Up – Image Setup Dialogue Box
  • Understanding the differences between: Canvas size; Image Size and Resolution in Pixels/mm; File size
  • Workspaces
  • Create, Open and Import Images
  • Layer Management and Manipulation
  • Selection Tools and Techniques
  • Most Commonly Used Transform Tools
  • Image Colour Adjustments
  • Layer Masks
  • Clone Stamp
  • Content Aware Fill
  • Save Photoshop Files and Save as JPEGs
  • Layer Management and Manipulation – Cont.
  • Brushes
  • Colours, Swatches and Gradients
  • Basic Floor Plan Rendering using Colours
  • Applying Layer Effects – Shadows and Glows
  • Filter Effects
  • Basic Floor Plan Lighting Effects

This Photoshop Essentials course is designed for individuals with little to no experience using Photoshop and provides a strong foundation in the core tools and interface.

While no prior Photoshop knowledge is required, participants must have a basic level of computer confidence and dexterity to benefit from the course. The sessions will move at a steady pace, and students are expected to follow guided exercises and use keyboard shortcuts effectively during the class.

Is this course right for you?
You’ll get the most from this course if you:

  • Can confidently operate a computer (Windows or Mac)
  • Are comfortable using a keyboard and mouse together 
  • Can perform basic tasks like opening/closing programs and navigating folders
  • Know how to use common keyboard shortcuts (e.g. Ctrl + C for copy, Ctrl + Z for undo) 
  • Can comfortably follow step-by-step instructions while using both hands on the keyboard and mouse 
  • Can focus in a group setting with minimal one-to-one assistance

A PC will be provided for each student for use throughout the course.

What students need to bring

  • Notebook and pen
  • bring a note of your own Adobe ID login. If you don’t already have one, Please register for a free account at www.adobe.com prior to the course, and remember to bring the details with you.
  • a USB memory stick or similar to save your work

Additional information

Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes).

Timetable

Student registration: 9.30am - 10am
Course teaching: 10am - 4.15pm
Morning teaching: 10am - 1pm
Lunch break: 1pm - 2pm (lunch is not included)
Afternoon teaching: 2pm - 4.15pm (15 minute break)
Teaching finishes: 4.15pm

General Information

"Short courses are open to anyone aged 18 and over. The course fee covers tuition and materials where stated. You will need to bring all other items listed under the ‘Materials to bring’ section.

Refreshments

Coffee and tea are included in the course fee, but you will need to bring lunch with you to eat in the refreshments room. There are also plenty of other local venues to purchase food.

Access

Please tell us about your needs in confidence by emailing: [email protected] This venue has steps to the front reception, with limited access via a side gate to the ground floor. There is a small lift to higher floors or stairs.
