Course Description

This course is for those who have already experienced Japanese woodblock printing and would like to develop their skills further. You will start the course by playing a quick printing game to refresh your memory of how to print, before looking at a slide show of other artists for inspiration and discussion. We will go over our use of the carving tools, remind ourselves how to plan a multiblock print, and print using some specialist and more advanced printing techniques.

You are welcome to bring projects which you have already started, as well as to keep the options open and to respond to other historical prints, such as those in the local British Museum. You might decide to embark on a new project, develop a previous project or even collaborate with others, as has happened in the past. The recommended size for the project is either 14cm x 20 cm or 20cm x 28 cm and you can decide whether to focus on multiple block printing, or on detailed carving, or on specialist printed effects.

This course consists of 3 consecutive days (Friday – Sunday).
